The Gerry & Peggy Peterson
La Guitarra Education Fund
Music education has always been a hallmark of the Festival, as we seek to increase the understanding and appreciation of classical guitar. Each Festival presents interesting and informative lectures, community outreach programs, and hand-made instrument exhibits. All of these events are open to the public, free of charge.
The cornerstone of the Festival education are the Masterclasses, which are class-room style guitar lessons, open for public viewing. We offer 20 students of all ages and levels, the extraordinary opportunity to receive priceless insight and instruction from the world’s foremost Master teachers. Since 1999, the cost to view a Masterclass has remained just $10.
We are extremely proud to have The Gerry & Peggy Peterson La Guitarra Education Fund! This will insure the continuation and expansion of the Festival Masterclasses and music education for many years to come.
We are able add a fifth Masterclass at this year's Festival, and increase the total students to twenty! (see "Masterclasses")
The fund is administered by Cal Poly State University. Please contact the Festival Director, or Cal Poly Arts to join in this worthwhile cause.
The Peterson Legacy:
For over sixty years Gerry and Peggy Peterson were avid supporters of the San Luis Obispo music community. They believed that music has the power to make the world a better place.
The Petersons’ passion and commitment became a driving force in establishing an endowment for the San Luis Obispo Symphony, which celebrated its 50th year in 2011.
They were also founders of the Cal Poly Performing Arts Center. No music project went without encouragement. So when asked to help the Director expand this classical guitar Festival, they were there once again, at the forefront.
To quote Russ De Angelo, Festival Director, "No one derived more pure joy from music than Peggy. She was first and foremost a great teacher, and even after my years of guitar study in Los Angeles, it was Peggy who taught me the true value and power of music."
